Synopsis
Ingrid and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire present a wide selection of the most frequently referenced Greek myths. They are classified into four groups: 1. Older Times (preceding Zeus) 2. Zeus and his family, 3. Minor gods and 4. Mortal descendants of Zeus.
Review
This beautifully illustrated book of Greek myths is not only comprehensive, the myths are simply and lyrically told. Greek myths influence so much our our literature and art that having a knowledge of them can be very, very helpful. Also, many of the books in the genre of children's fantasy are in one way or another influenced by Greek mythology. I first read this book when I was in the sixth grade. I clearly remember being entranced by the stories and reading them again and again. Ingrid and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire, working as joint authors and illustrators, have done a masterful job of bringing these seminal stories to life. They are engaging, enjoyable reading whether or not you relate them to anything else.
Illustrations
The illustrations are lithographs; some colored, some black and white. When researching this book, the D'Aulaires travelled to Greece in order to study and sketch various artifacts (armor, jugs, buildings, etc.) from ancient Greece. Consequently, the illustrations are an integral part of the book, helping to place the reader in the era of the myths.
